Please read the candidate notes on the University’s pre-employment https://www.jobs.ox.ac.uk/pre-employment-checks screening procedures at: About the Astrophoria Foundation Year Programme The Astrophoria Foundation Year (AFY) Programme admitted its first students for entry in October 2023, with 22 students on the course in the first year, rising to 50 by 2027. It is a one-year fully-funded foundation programme for UK state school students with significant academic potential, who have experienced severe personal disadvantage and/or disrupted education which has resulted in them being unable to apply directly for an Oxford undergraduate degree programme. Unlike foundation years at some other universities, the AFY Programme is not intended to be a conversion-course equivalent to redoing A-levels, instead the AFY Programme admits bright students whose academic studies have been disrupted by extensive disadvantage but who have potential and are considered able to be able to flourish on an undergraduate course at Oxford given an additional year of teaching. The AFY Programme enables motivated students to reach their academic potential at Oxford through a supportive and challenging academic course aimed at developing each individual student’s confidence, self-belief and personal achievement. Foundation Year students apply through UCAS for their undergraduate degree course with a foundation year (e.g Chemistry with Foundation Year). They are selected through a subject specific rigorous admission process similar to the UG admissions process and have been made offers of AAB at A level (or equivalent Level 3 qualification). The subject content of the CEMS course is based on A level material within physics, chemistry and maths, giving students an opportunity to revisit material in a different teaching context. For science this process involves moving them from the heavily structured questions and answers in A-level or equivalent to using their knowledge in unfamiliar-looking problems, significantly enhancing both problem-solving skills and explanatory skills. After such a year they can enter the degree for which they have applied much better prepared to succeed as undergraduates in the Oxford system without the usual settling-in period. It is a steep learning curve: by the end of May 2024 the 2023-24 CEMS cohort were able to tackle 1st term undergraduate tutorial problems. Foundation Year students who pass the Foundation Year at the required standard of 60% over the whole CEMS course will be admitted to their degree course of application without the need to re-apply. Candidates who choose to study elsewhere or do not meet the progression standard but none the less pass the course will be awarded a CertHE qualification. The AFY Programme comprises subject specific teaching and the Preparation for Undergraduate Studies (PUGS) Course. The PUGS course offers students an opportunity to develop the skills required to be a successful undergraduate student and meet many of the selection criteria required by the courses to which we hope AFY students will progress. As such, PUGS is the core foundational and underpinning element of the AFY Programme overall – supporting the AFY cohort to develop the essential skills that they need to deploy in the study of their respective subject areas. This fundamental nature leads to PUGS representing about 30% of the individual contact time that AFY students will receive. April 2025 4 The purpose of students taking the AFY Programme rather than remedial A-level (or equivalent) teaching is the university teaching context which encourages them to think for themselves, learning to compare and assess sources as well as understanding topics deeply, rather than merely regurgitating content. The AFY Programme gives them the enhanced study experience similar to that offered at a very successful school and in the process boosts their confidence in using factual knowledge, but does not deliver large amounts of new material. It is a one-year fully-funded foundation programme for UK state school students with significant academic potential, who have experienced severe personal disadvantage and/or disrupted education which has resulted in them being unable to apply directly for an Oxford undergraduate degree programme. Unlike foundation years at some other universities, the AFY Programme is not intended to be a conversioncourse equivalent to redoing A-levels. Instead, the AFY Programme admits bright students whose academic studies have been disrupted by extensive disadvantage but who have potential and are considered able to flourish on an undergraduate course at Oxford given an additional year of teaching. The AFY Programme enables motivated students to reach their academic potential at Oxford through a supportive and challenging academic course aimed at developing each individual student’s academic skills, confidence, self-belief and personal achievement. AFY students apply through UCAS for their undergraduate degree course with a foundation year (e.g. PPE with Foundation Year). They are selected through a subject specific rigorous admission process similar to the UG admissions process and have been made offers of BBB at A level (or equivalent Level 3 qualification). AFY students who pass the Foundation Year at the required standard will be admitted to their undergraduate degree course of application without the need to re-apply. Candidates who choose to study NEW JD - PUGS (Prep for UG study) AFY Teaching Associate - 2025 4 elsewhere or do not meet the progression standard but who pass the course will be awarded a CertHE qualification. The AFY Programme comprise subject specific teaching and the Preparation for Undergraduate Studies (PUGS) Course. These two elements play complementary roles. The PUGS course offers students an opportunity to develop the skills required to be a successful undergraduate student and fulfil many of the selection criteria required by the courses to which we hope AFY students will progress. As such, PUGS is the core foundational and underpinning element of the AFY Programme overall, supporting the AFY cohort to develop the essential skills that they need to deploy in the study of their respective subject areas. The AFY subject teaching offers students an opportunity to develop the subject-specific skills required for successful study of their chosen undergraduate course and fulfil the subject-specific selection criteria required by these courses. This is achieved through the study of engaging subject courses, designed to prepare for and complement the first year of the Oxford undergraduate programme. For those undergraduate courses with specific requirements, the subject teaching provides an opportunity for AFY students to consolidate their understanding of relevant material required. The purpose of students taking the AFY Programme rather than remedial A-level (or equivalent) teaching is the university teaching context which encourages them to think for themselves, learning to engage analytically with sources as well as understanding topics deeply, rather than merely regurgitating content. The AFY Programme gives them the enhanced study experience similar to that offered at a very successful school and in the process will boost their confidence in using factual knowledge, but is not expected to deliver large amounts of new subject material.
