Reporting to Dr Rupert Stuart-Smith, Senior Research Associate in Climate Science and the Law, the postholder will be a computationally proficient scientist who will work on attribution and projections of climate change impacts on human health, with particular focus on climate change hotspots in southern Africa, the Andes, and southern Europe. Working within a multidisciplinary research group at the University of Oxford, the postholder will conduct scientific research that refines existing methods, sheds light on the impacts of climate change in understudied regions, and informs adaptation and legal responses to climate change impacts.

This research will include analyses of the effects of climate change on existing and future impacts (attribution and projections). In particular, the project will examine the contribution of individual emitters of greenhouse gases to the health impacts of climate change, the impact of different future emissions pathways (including those that temporarily overshoot the Paris Agreement’s temperature goal) on health, evaluating the applicability of different methods for conducting attribution studies, and the development of policy-relevant health indicators.

The successful candidate will primarily conduct analyses of the meteorological impacts of climate change but gain opportunities to work with interdisciplinary methods such as epidemiological and agricultural models. They will join a vibrant and growing research environment that builds on the University of Oxford’s expertise in climate science, attribution science, and interdisciplinary research at the interface of climate change science and law.

While their operational emissions are low, the advice of PSPs can significantly influence their clients’ actions, as they are trusted intermediaries of strategic advice. As such, this considerable influence can translate to measurable differences in emissions across the real economy. This influence was investigated by the Race to Zero and Oxford Net Zero in 2023 through the Professional Service Providers Working Group, co-chaired by Alexis McGivern and Ranjita Rajan from the University of Oxford. This group built on relevant precedents from financed and advertised emissions. This influence across PSPs, also known as ‘serviced emissions’, relates to the additional or avoided “emissions arising from or impacted by client activities that are informed and/or enabled by the advice and/or services of a professional service provider.” This could include, inter alia, difference in materials and energy consumption resulting from design choices made by a technical advisor (architect, engineer, designer), the uplift or drop in emissions as a result of increased sales/consumption of a product or related behaviour change as a result of an advertising campaign, or progress against sectoral transitions (e.g., a new low carbon plant opening vs continued investment in existing fossil based assets and technologies) following strategic advice provided to an industry player. Despite this important role that advisory roles play in setting strategy, the frameworks for measuring emissions and reporting on progress towards decarbonisation, do not yet recognize the impact of this influence. Out of 37 standards and voluntary initiatives assessed by Oxford Net Zero, only Race to Zero mentions this node of influence as part of good ‘net zero’ practice for corporates. 2025-2026 is a critical moment for standards, with many key standards and voluntary guidance (the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the Science Based Targets Initiative) undergoing revision and with the development of the first ever fully auditable standard (the ISO Net Zero Standard). We are looking for a highly motivated, organised and passionate individual to work on the uptake and implementation of these Race to Zero principles, especially focusing on integration of these ideas into the standards being updated in mid-2025 and 2026. You will work alongside a large community of NGO partners to define the standards-relevant language, which builds on and takes account of learning from the successful early implementation of the principles by leading actors, and work alongside standards partners and technical experts to integrate this language into the key standards. 179106 - Serviced Emissions & Engagement Manager - Job Description and Person Specification 2 Responsibilities ● Work to create and manage relationships with key professional services providers. Produce a working report the barriers and opportunities of integrating “serviced emissions” into PSP’s sustainability practices ● Map and manage the landscape of NGO partners working on “serviced emissions”, facilitating knowledge sharing between them and gathering their input on a workable definition for standards, ensuring this takes account of operational best practices from early adopters of existing principles. Build support from NGOs for the inclusion of serviced emission in standards ● Generate a workable, standards-relevant definition of ‘serviced emissions’ by summer 2025 (driven by external factors including major standards revision timelines), and support/lead efforts to ensure this is integrated into relevant standards development processes. ● Arrange meetings and consultations with practitioner partners to a) pull in best practice examples of the implementation of the “serviced emissions” concept and b) validate the standards-relevant definition, as above ● Conduct research with key practitioners to understand nodes of influence for clients to demand ‘serviced emissions’ data and action from PSPs ● Manage own academic research and administrative activities, including a small team of research assistants. ● Plan and manage different work strands and engagement of project stakeholders and meet deadlines ● Adapt existing and develop new research methodologies and materials as it relates to measuring and acting on the emissions enabled by professional services providers ● Prepare working theories on “serviced emissions” uptake and analyse qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining theories as appropriate ● Contribute ideas for new research projects and campaigns ● Develop ideas for generating further research income, and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers ● Collaborate in the preparation of research publications, and book chapters ● Present papers at conferences, public meetings and practitioner forums. ● Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on engagement with professional services firms ● Represent the research group at external meetings, especially with business stakeholders, either with other members of the group or alone ● Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, especially NGO partners Selection criteria Essential selection criteria 1. Hold a relevant PhD/DPhil, or other equivalent experience 2. Ability to develop strong and trusted relationships with senior stakeholders including NGO partners, practitioner partners (both clients and professional services providers), and standards setters 179106 - Serviced Emissions & Engagement Manager - Job Description and Person Specification 3 3. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, practitioner reports and represent the research group at meetings 6. Ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation 7. Outstanding verbal and written communication 8. Outstanding people management skills Desirable selection criteria 1. Experience of independently managing a discrete area of a research project 2. Prior professional experience in a professional services provider 3. Possess sufficient specialist knowledge of net zero for services providers, including key business models and constraints for implementing some of the recommendations of the Race to Zero group 4. Experience of actively collaborating in the development of research articles for publication. The Oxford Net Zero Initiative Oxford Net Zero draws on the University’s world-leading expertise in climate science and policy. Addressing the critical issue of how to reach global ‘net zero’ and halt global warming, it brings together leading academics from across the University’s disciplines, including Geography, Physics, Economics, Biology, Anthropology, Law and Earth Sciences. The initiative provides actionable research and new resources for policymakers and businesses at this critical juncture for international action on climate change. Essential questions that Oxford Net Zero is addressing include: ● How will carbon dioxide be distributed between the atmosphere, oceans, biosphere and lithosphere? ● Where will it be stored, in what forms, how stable will these storage pools be, who will own them, maintain them, and be accountable for them over the short, medium and long terms? ● How does net zero policy extend to other greenhouse gases? ● How will the social license to generate, emit, capture, transport, and store carbon dioxide evolve over the coming century? ● How can companies and governments credibly, and in a legally enforceable manner, commit to net zero? The Programme is co-led by Research Director Professor Sam Fankhauser and Executive Director Dr Steve Smith. It is supported by a £2.2 million investment from the University’s Strategic Research Fund, which aims to develop transformative new research programmes.
