The project https://www.bdi.ox.ac.uk/research/schistotrack The candidate will join the Big Data Institute and Nuffield Department of Population Health, which contain world renowned research groups and provide an excellent environment to gain multidisciplinary skills. In particular, the candidate will join the SchistoTrack Group (Chami Group) that extends big data methods to rural poor settings in sub-Saharan Africa. The key aim of the research group is to improve the effectiveness of treatment for schistosomiasis by taking a multifaceted approach that combines statistical learning with epidemiology, largescale fieldwork, and community engagement. Over 250m people are infected with schistosomes (parasitic blood flukes) and over 700m people live in areas with ongoing transmission; 90% of this burden is in sub-Saharan Africa. The main treatment strategy for schistosomiasis is mass drug administration, whereby at-risk individuals are provided praziquantel without diagnosis. If left untreated, schistosome infections such as that with Schistosoma mansoni can cause upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding, periportal fibrosis, bloody diarrhoea, anaemia, and enlarged liver/spleen. Despite widely available treatment, schistosomiasis-associated morbidities persist due to the lack of protection from treatment against reinfection, imperfect drug efficacy, and long-term effects of previous infections. The Oxford-Uganda Collaboration on Schistosomiasis is a strong partnership between Oxford and the Uganda Ministry of Health. This post is to support an ongoing prospective cohort in rural Uganda which aims to identify the factors predicting schistosomiasis-associated (multi)morbidities. The position is based in Oxford. The cohort is in villages bordering Lake Albert, Lake Victoria, and the River Nile. The work involves extensive primary data collection on site in rural villages with the coordination of large-scale field teams in Uganda involving surveyors, technicians, auxiliary workers, sonographers, ethicists, data entrants, Ministry of Health officials, nurses, clinicians, malacologists, local village residents, district health officers, regional hospital staff, and others. The project is a result of over a decade of collaboration between the PI, Associate Professor Goylette Chami, and the Uganda Ministry of Health. Over 8,000 individuals have been surveyed with over 4,200 individuals assessed on site for clinical examinations. Three annual timepoints and other minor timepoints already have been completed. Health Data Scientist job description, April 2025 3 The role We are seeking a well-organised individual with a strong interest in programming, data analyses, and quality control. The data wrangler will be part of a team of approximately 10 individuals at Oxford, including DPhils, postdocs, and administrators. The Oxford team works across statistical, machine learning, and image analysis methods. The primary focus of this role is to manage the unique, highly dimensional data (spatial-temporal, images, biomedical datasets, etc.) generated from the cohort in Uganda through data wrangling and to support the rest of the Oxford and Uganda teams for data analyses. This post provides an exciting opportunity to work with diverse data types, address a disease of poverty, and join a multidisciplinary team employing quantitative approaches to novel biomedical problems. The position is a great opportunity for someone with a strong quantitative background, who would like to gain experience working with a large research team on challenging data science projects. The post is suitable for someone with excellent programming and analytical skills. The candidate will report directly to the study PI, Associate Professor Goylette Chami. Responsibilities  Help design data management processes, data annotation strategies and detailed plans to support reproducible data analysis;  Produce reports on data handling and procedures, including recording changes to the databases and datasets in a well-structured manner;  Develop scripts to interrogate datasets, automate tasks, and perform routine statistical analyses;  Perform the data wrangling in close collaboration with senior group members to assess, manipulate, clean, and validate large datasets from a variety of sources;  Communicate effectively using a variety of platforms, to present outputs of the work to the Oxford team, and for presentation for community engagement in Uganda;  To keep the PI informed on progress and developments connected with delivery of a particular task;  Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on methodologies or procedures, and actively participate in ongoing research projects;  Maintain confidentiality regarding research data and ensure information governance principles are adhered to across the project and team.
