Are you an experienced Postdoctoral Scientist with an interest in malaria chemoprevention?

The Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO), based at the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health in Oxford, is seeking to recruit a Senior Postdoctoral Research Scientist with a clinical or biomedical background to lead and coordinate research on malaria chemoprevention.

Malaria chemoprevention is a new research theme at IDDO, which we are setting up in partnership with Malaria Consortium, the largest implementer of chemoprevention in Africa. You will be responsible for coordinating with key stakeholders for timely sharing of data on malaria chemoprevention studies, and for meeting project milestones as defined by our partner Malaria Consortium. You will determine research questions answerable from available data, and advise and collaborate with PhD students and other staff at IDDO in the Science Team on a day-to-day basis. Other responsibilities will include contributing to grant applications to funding bodies to support research in this area, to the production of scientific reports and publications for high profile journals, including taking leadership in more specialised publications and conducting detailed analysis of available datasets.

It is essential that you hold a PhD/DPhil in clinical medicine or biomedical research, and have previous research experience. You will have experience, ability and practical success solving quantitative problems, and excellent and effective communication skills, both orally and written for presenting research results clearly, to a broad audience. Experience working with biomedical data would be highly desirable for this position.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.

This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract until 31 December 2027 and is funded by the Malaria Consortium.

Only applications received before 12 midday on 9 June 2025 will be considered. Please quote 178581 on all correspondence.

The primary goal of the work is to improve our understanding of where chemoprevention is the most cost-effective and how it might be deployed optimally. As part of IDDO, the WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN) is an international collaborative project that aims to pool individual participant data from malaria studies in order to improve treatment and prevention guidelines. You would be tasked with helping set up a new research theme on chemoprevention, engaging key stakeholders, determining key research questions, and working on evidence synthesis through pooled individual participant data meta-analyses. It is essential that you hold a PhD in a relevant clinical or biomedical area with demonstrable experience or ability. You do not need to be familiar with research in malaria, but you need to be motivated to work with clinicians and laboratory scientists in order to understand the subject matter. This will involve coordinating data sharing, pooled individual participant data meta-analysis, and presenting work at conferences and in publications. Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO) IDDO’s vision is effective treatment and control of infectious diseases affecting the most vulnerable populations. Our mission is to reduce the impact of neglected and emerging infections by improving the evidence for their effective management through wide scale collaboration and data reuse within the global infectious disease community. IDDO is a data-sharing platform that hosts a portfolio of research themes, bringing together clinical, pharmacology, molecular, in vitro and medicine quality data for poverty related diseases and emerging infections including for example, malaria, Covid-19, Ebola, Chagas disease, visceral leishmaniasis and anti-microbial resistance (AMR). IDDO aims to facilitate the sharing of data and research protocols at the earliest opportunity to bolster collaboration among the public health and research communities, and ensure that researchers are prepared to implement research to advance science expeditiously in the context of neglected tropical diseases and the next infectious disease outbreak. IDDO is building upon the work of the WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN). WWARN has had considerable success, both in establishing ethical data sharing systems that conform to international rules on patient privacy and protection, and in engaging the malaria research community; IDDO is adapting and developing these systems and processes for other infectious diseases using WWARN as a prototype. IDDO’s work seeks to: • • Establish an accessible and trusted infectious disease observatory which acts as the central repository for data that contributes to the evidence base of understanding selected infectious diseases and their treatment, allowing inter- and cross-disciplinary analysis of global data. Ensure the long-term security and accessibility of data so that data can be productively reused in a collaborative platform for modelling and analysis by the larger scientific community. 1 • • • • • Gather and share best methodological clinical research practices, to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of data capture, management and integration of clinical, pharmacologicalpharmacometric and laboratory-based studies. Develop tools to facilitate the use of these standards in prospective clinical trials in infectious diseases. Engage with the scientific community to implement and evolve these tools as the gold standard within and across infectious disease fields. Develop and advocate for policies to establish fair conditions of use, and mechanisms to ensure that the contributions of those generating the data are properly recognised, so that data are made available for effective and responsible data sharing, and in full compliance with relevant data protection and other legislations. Explore application of IDDO’s expertise and data standardisation, combination and visualisation to other disease themes, or scientific and policy questions.
