Postdoctoral Research Associate in tissue-driven mathematical modelling of fibrogenesis
Applications for this vacancy closed on 5 November 2024 at 12:00PM
**About the Role**
We are seeking a Post-doctoral scientist with a PhD in Mathematics or
Engineering degree, to take up a joint position working with Prof Ling-Pei
Ho's and Prof Helen Byrne’s groups, based at the Weatherall Institute of
Molecular Medicine and Mathematics Institute, and in collaboration with Dr
Anna Sher, GSK.
The successful candidate will join a growing research programme in immune
mechanisms of lung fibrosis and alveolar regeneration in chronic lung
fibrosis. They will develop mathematical models to better understand immune
drivers of fibrotic lung diseases, focusing on idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
(IPF).
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a specific type of chronic progressive lung
fibrosis with particularly poor outcomes. Much of our understanding of the
disease mechanism has been gleaned from imperfect animal models of injury and
repair response, and blood samples from IPF patients. In recent years, we have
studied lung tissues from patients with IPF and identified and characterised
areas of advancing disease in the lungs.
**About You**
You should have a PhD/DPhil in Mathematics or Engineering
You should have experience of postdoctoral research in mathematical biology
and multidisciplinary team-working in collaboration with experimentalists,
clinicians and/or pharma;
You should also have experience of developing and analysing mathematical
models of biological systems, using numerical and analytical methods.
**About the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine**
The Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine (NDM) is one of the largest
departments of the University of Oxford and is part of the Medical Sciences
Division, with responsibility for a significant part of the teaching of
clinical students within the Medical School.
**Benefits of working**
University employees enjoy 38 days’ paid holiday, generous pension schemes,
travel discounts, and a variety of professional development opportunities. Our
range of other employee benefits and discounts also includes free entry to the
Botanic Gardens and University colleges, and discounts at University museums.
See https://hr.admin.ox.ac.uk/staff-benefits
**Application Process**
The post is full-time, 37.5 hours per week and fixed-term for 12 months in the
first instance.
Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You must upload a
supporting statement and CV as part of your online application.
Only applications received before 12:00 midday on 05/11/2024 will be
considered.
