Senior Research Software Engineer in Edge Computing

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Software Engineer, to join
the Computing Infrastructure group led by Professor Noa Zilberman, at the
Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford). This full-time post is
funded by Horizon Europe (UKRI) and is fixed-term until 31 December 2025.





The Senior Research Software Engineer will contribute to the EU SMARTEDGE
project. SMARTEDGE is multiple-partners Horizon Europe research project on
Edge-Intelligence. In this project, Oxford is leading research of dynamic-
swarm networking, enabling autonomous network-accelerated operations through
in-network computing integration. You will have responsibility to contribute
to the SMARTEDGE project’s development activities, including but not limited
to:





• Participating in the development of network accelerated code for SMARTEDGE.



• Participating in the development of DPU accelerated code for SMARTEDGE.



• Develop methodologies and software to provide network-security to swarms of
devices at the edge.



• Engage in development activities with the SMARTEDGE consortium and with
international partners.



• These activities will require testing, validation and documentation within
the procedures established by the SMARTEDGE project.





You should hold a Master’s Degree or PhD/DPhil in Engineering, Computer
Science or other related field and/or an equivalent professional experience in
a research environment (with the possibility to underfill at Grade 7 (£36,024
- £44,263 p.a.) if candidate is expected to ‘contribute to’ instead of ‘have
responsibility for’ some of the duties). You should also have significant
software development or FPGA development experience in areas related to cloud
computing or scientific computing. An excellent knowledge of either Python, C
or C++, P4 or Verilog, is essential, as well as in either OS network stack,
hardware/network acceleration or FPGA design.
