Clinical Research Fellow in Cardiovascular Science

Applications for this vacancy closed on 20 August 2024 at 12:00PM
We are seeking a highly motivated Clinical Research Fellow to drive a
translational programme of work in the division of Cardiovascular Medicine in
Oxford, that aims to investigate the effects of a novel antidiabetic drug on
the cardiovascular system and that relies on the Oxford Heart Vessels and Fat
(ox-HVF) Programme. Ox-HVF studies the interplay between the cardiovascular
system and adipose tissue. This is a flagship programme that has recruited so
far >1500 patients undergoing cardiac surgery, and has built the world’s
largest and most sophisticated clinical cohort, with biopsies (and
RNAsequencing data) from 6 different adipose tissue depots, arteries, veins
and myocardial tissue, ex vivo phenotypic characterization of all these
samples, all of which are linked with up to 15 years outcomes data of the
patients and repeated Computed Tomography Angiography imaging data for disease
progression. The post-holder will investigate the effects of the novel
antidiabetic drug on vascular and myocardial tissue by performing ex vivo
assays on samples obtained from patients recruited under the ox-HVF programme.
They will also take advantage of the transcriptomic data from hundreds of ox-
HVF human samples obtained from the heart and the vessels and of Mendelian
randomisation approaches, as well as they will perform in vitro experiments,
to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Recruitment and consenting patients for research if needed

• Collection (from cardiac surgery) and processing (in the ox-HVF labs) of
human tissues and blood samples

• Perform functional bioassays on human tissues and primary cells (wet lab
experiments) under the supervision of an experienced post-doctoral scientist

• Preparation and presentation of research findings at the group and
departmental meetings

• Preparation of progress reports on research and ensuring the lab books and
electronic records are fully up to date and can be kept as a record of the
research

• Day-to-day laboratory housekeeping: e.g. setting-up and clearing away
equipment, ordering lab supplies, maintaining laboratory in clean and orderly
fashion

• Flexibility (when human tissue/blood collection is involved and/or cell
culture experiments are concerned)

Essential selection criteria

• Primary medical degree, such as medicine (MD/MBBS) -GMC registration not
essential for the role

• Academic background in medical research and the motivation and ability to
undertake and contribute to the research programmes.

• Excellent organisational, communication and professional skills to work
effectively in a diverse team of basic scientists, medical clinicians, and
others.

• Excellent personal and interpersonal skills, both in-person and online, that
result in professional and respectful relationships with all team members.

• Fluency in English (should be proficient in medical and academic English and
have published academic research in English).

Desirable selection criteria

• A personal publication history that demonstrates passion for translational
cardiovascular research

• Documented experience in wet lab research
