Postdoctoral Research Assistant Linking HI to the Cosmic Web with MIGHTEE
Applications for this vacancy closed on 3 September 2024 at 12:00PM
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Linking HI
to the Cosmic Web with MIGHTEE
The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 6 months
This is a short-term role funded through the UKRI Frontier Research Grant of
Prof. Matt Jarvis to exploit the first data release of the MIGHTEE-HI
component of the MIGHTEE survey in the COSMOS field. The role with require a
high level of technical expertise to determine the link between the gas in
galaxies, traced in HI, with their position within the cosmic web.
The successful candidate will
• Analyse MIGHTEE-HI data alongside multi-wavelength data in the COSMOS field
and write publishable papers based on this.
• Work closely with other members of Prof. Jarvis’ group to maximise the
impact of the MIGHTEE-HI Date Release 1.
• The post-holder will be expected to contribute to Departmental life in
Oxford Astrophysics. We provide opportunities to teach in tutorials and
laboratories, supervise undergraduate project students and contribute to our
active outreach programme. Other opportunities involve running our
astrophysics seminar series and engaging in Departmental committees.
• Undertake quality control checks of the HI data cubes for the preparation of
Data Release 2 for MIGHTEE-HI
• Help in the reduction and analysis of recently obtained DDT observations to
complement the MIGHTEE HI DR1 data
• Co-organise weekly group meetings on HI and the cosmic web
• The post-holder will be expected to contribute to Departmental life in
Oxford Astrophysics. We provide opportunities to teach in tutorials and
laboratories, supervise undergraduate project students and contribute to our
active outreach programme. Other opportunities involve running our
astrophysics seminar series and engaging in Departmental committees.
Applicants should possess, or be very close to obtaining a doctorate in
physics or a related field and ideally a strong background in Astrophysics .
• A demonstrable understanding of the link between gas and environment in the
context of the MIGHTEE radio interferometry survey
• Experience of using filament finding algorithms on multi-wavelength data
sets to characterise the cosmic web
• Demonstrable expertise in measuring photometry and determining galaxy
properties from multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopic data
The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.
Please direct enquiries about the role to Prof. Matt Jarvis
(Matt.jarvis@physics.ox.ac.uk)
Only applications received before midday 29 August 2024 can be considered. You
will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and
details of two referees as part of your online application. Your referees
should be asked to send their letters, before the application deadline, to
leanne.odonnell@physics.ox.ac.uk.
