The Oxford Internet Institute – founded in 2001 - is a multidisciplinary
research and teaching department of the University of Oxford, dedicated to the
social science of the Internet.
We have an exciting opportunity to join Professor Taddeo’s team at the Oxford
Internet Institute, University of Oxford to work on a project on the ‘Ethics
of Artificial Intelligence in Defence’.
The project is led by Professor Taddeo, funded by the MoD Defence science
technology laboratory (Dstl) and developed in collaboration with the Alan
Turing Institute.
We are offering 1 full-time or 2 part-time fixed term contract positions, to
start immediately and to end on March 2025. The successful candidate will be
based in Oxford but you will be able to agree a pattern of regular UK based
remote working with your line manager.
The successful candidate will;
• Work with a team of experts undertaking cutting-edge, comprehensive and
systematic analyses of the ethical, social and legal impact of the use of
artificial intelligence (AI) for national defence purposes.
• Have the opportunity of shaping innovative research and with it the debate
on the governance of AI in defence.
• Contribute to research articles published in international, peer-reviewed
leading journals.
The successful candidate will be responsible for;
• Contribute to draft research articles.
• Analyse academic and grey literature to distil key findings.
• Contribute to the organisation of focus groups and workshop.
• Contributing to the drafting of research reports.
• Participate in academic conferences and experts meeting presenting research
findings.
The successful candidate will have:
• A background (Master or PhD) in legal studies, comparative law, tech
governance, or defence studies or relevant fields
• Expertise on data governance, both legal and ethical aspects of data
collection, security, and sharing and/or
• Expertise on International Humanitarian Law and/or
• Expertise on procurement for the defence sector and/or
• Expertise on computer science, data science, artificial intelligence.
