System Administrator - Research Service Support

**About the role**
We have an exciting opportunity for a skilled and motivated System
Administrator to join our team, supporting the administration and maintenance
of Unix-based servers in a research-driven environment supporting GSK-Oxford
Pre-Cancer & Immuno-Prevention Alliance (GO-PRECISE) and related Oxford Cancer
programmes. In this role, you will be responsible for managing Unix/Linux-
based servers, ensuring their stability, availability, and performance, as
well as backups, disaster recovery, and security. Additionally, you will work
with Docker containers to support research applications and services,
automating routine system tasks and collaborate with research teams to
understand infrastructure needs and assist in the setup of environments and
services.
The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in Unix/Linux administration,
Docker, and system security, and will be committed to maintaining robust
infrastructure that supports critical cancer research.
The role will report to the Strategic Data Platform Development Lead in
Oxford.
The post is based at Oxford Cancer, Churchill Hospital, Oxford, OX3 7LE and is
offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis until 31st March 2027.
An early start date would be preferable for this role.
**About you**
You will have a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a
related field, with extensive experience in Unix/Linux system administration
within a research, academic, or similar environment. You should have a strong
background in server administration, Docker, system backups and version
control systems.
A working knowledge of shell scripting for automation and management tasks is
essential, as well as experience with cloud computing platforms and networking
protocols.
You will be a proactive problem solver with the ability to work independently
and as part of a cross-functional team. Excellent communication and
interpersonal skills are essential, along with a structured and analytical
mindset, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining secure, high-
performing systems.
