Project Archivist (Cataloguer) - 2 posts

Applications for this vacancy closed on 20 February 2024 at 12:00PM
The Bodleian Libraries are seeking to appoint two Project Archivists to
support the work of the Archives & Modern Manuscripts team, based in the
Weston Library, a flagship facility designed for the care and promotion of
Special Collections.

In this post you will make an important contribution to the Bodleian
Libraries’ ambitions to surface its archive and manuscript collections,
processing several archives currently inaccessible for research. You will be
committed to maintaining up-to-date knowledge of professional literature and
best practice, with the confidence to exercise strong professional judgment to
achieve rapid and efficient surveying, sorting, arranging, and sensitivity
review and cataloguing of modern archival collections, according to the
Bodleian’s processes and standards. You will be pro-active in promoting newly
available resources to potential audiences.

You will have a first degree relevant to the Libraries’ holdings of 20th
century archives and manuscripts, or the ability to demonstrate equivalent
knowledge gained through other means. Knowledge in one or more of the
following subject areas is desirable, but not essential: Modern Greek, 20th-
century European politics, 20th-century British literature, 20th-century
classical music and 20th/21st century history, including the history of
medicine. You will have a professionally recognised postgraduate qualification
in archives management, digital curation or a related subject.

Your oral and written communication skills will be excellent, and you will be
capable of working well independently and in a team. You will have strong
project management skills and be able to manage your time effectively. You
will be conversant with professional standards for archives, and especially
relevant to cataloguing these materials. You will have experience of
cataloguing modern archives, with evidence of aptitude for high-throughput
original cataloguing, and exposure to archives metadata management
environments. An ability to grasp new subjects quickly is essential, as is
knowledge of the legal and ethical context to work with modern archives.

These are full-time, fixed-term positions, working 37.5 hours per week for 16
months. Two posts are available. This position is subject to a satisfactory
basic Disclosure and Barring Service check due to lone work involving highly
valuable items. This role will also require some manual handling and driving
on University business.

**You will be required to upload your CV and a supporting statement as part of
your online application.** Your supporting statement should list each of the
essential and desirable selection criteria, as listed in the job description,
and explain how you meet each one. CV’s submitted on their own will not be
considered.

Our staff and students come from all over the world, and we proudly promote a
friendly and inclusive culture. Diversity is positively encouraged, through
diverse groups and champions, as well as a number of family-friendly policies,
such as the right to apply for flexible working and support for staff
returning from periods of extended absence, for example shared parental leave.

Our range of employee benefits and discounts include 38 days leave (including
bank holidays), extensive training and development opportunities, access to
travel and childcare schemes, free entry to colleges, discounted access to
sporting facilities and a wide range of other staff discounts. For more
details please see **https://hr.admin.ox.ac.uk/staff-benefits.**

We aim to provide a supportive working environment and are happy to discuss
training and professional development opportunities. The Chair of this
recruitment panel will be Jeremy McIlwaine, Senior Archivist, who can be
contacted with enquiries relating to the role
(jeremy.mcilwaine@bodleian.ox.ac.uk). General queries about the recruitment
and application process should be directed to the Recruitment team within our
Human Resources department (recruitment@bodleian.ox.ac.uk).

Only applications received online by 12:00 midday (BST/GMT) on Tuesday 20
February 2024 can be considered. Interviews are expected to take place on
Thursday 14 March 2024.
